Okay everyone…… Saddle-up !! The 2008 show season is here, the sky is blue and the air temps are beginning to rise ….finally. The Fun Day at the “Flying T” Ranch in Cody, Wyoming was just that….a fun event. The day began a little behind schedule. We all woke up to more spring snow here in “Big Wonderful” so it was a little slow going first thing in the morning. But as the day progressed the riders where shedding their winter jackets and riding both indoors and out. Those that braved the icy conditions in the morning drove home on dry roads after a great day of competition, friendship, fun, food and drink. Many thank-you’s go the Bob and Nanette Till for the use of their wonderful facility, Carl Larson of Billings, Montana for announcing, Nikki Larson for being the show secretary, Kristy Wheeler the show secretary organizer, Janet Larson for being the gopher, George Stone our Judge from Butte, Montana, Scribe Heather Phancook of Billings, Montana and student scribe Steve Devenyns of Cody, gate workers Priscilla Bales, and Jeff Brock both of Cody, Wyoming. Aunt Nanny’s Kitchen did the lunch and the grill was manned by Spence Beniot, of Cody. The largest class of the day had 14 competitors and the smallest had 5. The winners in these classes were: Mares: Pay Chex Gold, shown by J. R. Winter and owned by Kristy Wheeler, Geldings: Hesa Real Dun Deal, shown by J. R. Winter and owned by Nanette Till, 2 Handed Rookie: Remmy, owned and shown by Emmanuelle McCarty, Mystery Class: Remmy & Emmanuelle McCarty, Non-Pro: all zeroed (everyone must have been schooling J), Open: Pay Chex Gold, shown by J. R. Winter, Rookie: Daisy, owned & shown by Russ Vinger, Mystery Class: Rooster, owned & shown by Collie Vinger. A drawing was held for tickets for two to the Pat Parelli Clinic to be held in Billings, Montana, May 24, 2008 and the winners were the Larson family. The raffle for the custom made Estoro western hat (a $400 value) is still going on, so if you’d like to buy a chance to win, contact Nanette Till at (307) 587-2666. The drawing will be held at the Hole In The Wall show June 6-8, 2008 in Thermopolis, WY. You need not be present to win. The Montana Reining Horse Association is hosting a show May 10th and 11th in Wilsall, Montana at the Anderson Training Stable. It is sure to be a fun show and the first of many at the Anderson Arena . For more information go to their web site at www.mtrha.com. June 6, 7 & 8, the Hole In The Wall Slide, is the first three day show hosted by CSRHA. This show is shaping up to be a terrific event. As far as competition goes we have competitors already registered from as far away a Wisconsin. As well as competing on our horses in the sport of reining, Hot Springs County and the City of Thermopolis have been more than gracious in offering many discounts though out the community for a fun filled weekend. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a marvelous weekend in Thermopolis, Wyoming. As a reminder we do need silent auction items for the show. We also still need sponsors for the show. So if anyone would like to sponsor or knows anyone who would be interested, please contact one of the officers or board members. July 10, 11 & 12, the Yellowstone Reining Horse Association is hosting an event in Wilsall, Montana also at the Anderson Training Stable. For more information you can go to the YRHA web site at www.yellowstonereining.com or call Sharlene Stone at (406)494-3850. The Northern Rockies Reining Horse Association has set up a fund for Kurt Pipinich to help with medical expenses. Kurt was just recently diagnosed with colon cancer. He is the husband of Renee Pipinich, Vice President of the Northern Rockies Reining Horse Association, NRHA Judge and fellow reiner. You can check the NRRHA web-site at www.northernrockiesreining.com for the address to send donations. Get your ponies in shape for a very busy, fun, spin’n & slide’n summer. See y’all at the shows! Until next time………Happy Trails J

The Cowboy States Reining Horse Association completed their first full year as an Affiliate under the National Reining Horse Association and the first annual awards Banquet was held at the Irma Hotel in Cody Wyoming, It was a very festive day in Cody with a St Patrick’s Day Parade and Bagpipers entertaining the guests of the Irma Hotel. The Banquet was held in the historic Governors Room. Starting with a short general membership meeting, followed by a social hour and silent auction, the perfect location for this event. CSRHA would like to thank each and every one of you that so graciously donated items for the silent auction. It is very much appreciated. J Shauna Roberts did a great job creating the little desert cactus basket center pieces accented by green balloons and shamrock garland. Also a big thank you to both Shauna and Susie Barry for getting everyone checked in. Dinner was served following the social hour with everyone enjoying The Irma’s famous prime rib and Dijon chicken. As the evening went on, fun, laughter and friendship prevailed. After dinner, Joanie Broadbent gave a little talk about how the Cowboy States Reining Horse Association came about, starting out with just a handful of people and evolving to its current status. We are proud of all the hard work and dedication our friends and members have given us. C. R. Morrison, Clyde Part, Montana, noted artist and sculptor extraordinaire and creator of many equine event trophies was our guest speaker. The topic of his talk was the history of the ever so coveted NRHA trophy, the “Morrison Bronze”. He also elaborated on the importance of the “grass roots” affiliate organizations across the country and the effect they have with the parent organization, The National Reining Horse Assn. We were sincerely honored to have C. R. and his charming wife, Alice, as our guests. They are both a trophy in themselves. The winners of the 2007 year end awards were honored. The champions of each class received a lovely denim trophy jacket monogrammed with the CSRHA logo and the name of the class won on the back. The reserve champions received one of the “first time offered and hot of the press” Morrison Plaques. A special note… if a female won, it was pictured with a female reiner and if a male won, it was pictured with a male reiner. C. R. never misses a detail. Third place champions received monogrammed halters in keeping with the CSRHA colors. Please check out the "Gallery" link for the individual class winners. The 2008 show season is rapidly clicking in to gear. The once a month lesson weekends this winter with Cameron Meissner from Manhattan, MT teaching at the Aspen Meadows Arena in Billings, MT. and J. R. Winter of Livingston, MT. teaching at the Flying T Ranch in Cody, WY really helped keep everyone’s skills on track, horses in shape and ready to hit the circuit for more champions in 2008. Starting off the season with our first CSRHA event is the Fun Day – Jackpot on Saturday, April 26th starting at 9:00 AM. Once again it will held at the Flying T Ranch in Cody. There are classes (NRHA patterns) for every caliber of rider including two fun mystery classes J. Entry fees are $5.00 per class with 50% payback through third place. Another fun day of playing in the dirt is April 19th which will be a schooling show held at Brackett Creek Quarter Horses in Wilsall, MT. The classes are typical reining classes, however, there will not be any payouts. All proceeds go to MRHA. Entry fees are $10 per class entered. Lunch will be served by MRHYA. There are 9 stalls available on site at $25 each. Happy New Year everyone J Big news!!!!!!!!!!!! The CSRHA Winter Challenge at the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, South Dakota was a big hit! Despite sub zero temperatures, wind, snow and ice, the weather didn’t stop most of the competitors. There were 150 entries in all which included the 2 AQHA reining classes that ran concurrent with the NRHA open and NRHA non-pro classes. This year’s show more than doubled the CSRHA 2007 Inaugural Event. Competitors west of the Big Horns Mountains were unable to make it across the frozen prairies or plow through the passes to show their horses. All that preparation and “no place to go”! The high score of the day was in the NRHA Open Class of 30 competitors. Two out of state riders endured the weather conditions to score a 73 and tie for the highest score as well as the first place win. After a flip of a coin Jack Wright of Penrose, Colorado was the winner riding Nu N Shiney for owner Bud Fay. They were awarded the NRHA Pewter Trophy and the K-J Leather Company special high score of the day award. Our other NRHA Open rider with a 73 was Justin Lawrence of Alzada, MT riding Night Time Shiner for the Mill Iron S Ranch of Kyle, South Dakota. Look under the "Forms" link to view the show results. Judge Mark Guynn endured a long day in the judges chair. He boarded the aircraft back to Colorado the morning after the show with a big smile and an extended Thank-You from all of us at CSRHA. Our show secretary, Connie Hendricks of Albion, Nebraska, did a fantastic job of organizing the competitors and kept the show moving along. South Dakota State University equestrian team members and their coach, Joe Humphrey, were life savers in this event since part of the working crew of the Cowboy States Reining Horse Association were snowed in on the west side of the Big Horn Mountains. Joe announced the entire event and the team members worked the “in and out” gates. They were terrific ring stewards too. Thank –You SDSU. Show Chairman, Kelly Gully, and NRHA Rep, Kevin Vesey, hung in there. CSRHA Board Member, Patti Larsen of Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Darlene Brunkhardt of Torrington, Wyoming worked a long hard day as well!!! ONE DAY, 150 entries and half the staff – GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!! Attached is a list of all the winners. Congrats to all. The 2008 show season is here so time to leg-up both horse and rider for a fun filled year with horses and friends; UPCOMING EVENTS Cameron Meissner Lesson Day(s) – Feb. 9, 2008 at the Aspen Meadows Arena in Billings, MT. One hour prior to the lunch break, J R will conduct a “pattern practice” for the morning students. You will be scored just as if you were in a show. Then he will critique your run so you can work on your trouble areas for the next time. These will be actual NRHA reining patterns. The “pattern practice” is optional and separate from the lessons. He will do the same thing for the afternoon students with the “pattern practice” following the last hour of lessons. Saturdays format will be repeated on Sunday. Beginning at 9:00AM. Lessons are $35.00 per hour and the pattern runs will be $5.00 per horse. Please contact Nanette Till at (307) 587-2666 or email nbtill@tctwest.net to reserve your spot.
