The 2010 Energy City Classic & Derby
Posted On: Jun 08 2010

The Cowboy States Reining Horse Association hosted our 3rd annual 3-day event with the Energy City Classic & Derby, which was held at the Cam-Plex in Gillette, Wyoming on June 4-6, 2010. It was proven that this event keeps getting better each year in that we had more than doubled this show with over 350 entries from Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho!  The CSRHA hosted a wonderful, warm Meet and Greet party on Friday night which was well attended by all.

We had a wide selection of classes ranging from the NRHA Open to the CSRHA’s 2-Handed Green as Grass classes, so there was something for every level of competitor! We also had a Youth 10 & Under Short Stirrup class which was created by the NRHA to give our youngest riders a chance to participate in reining!

The stands were full on Saturday night during the NRHA 4, 5, & 6 Year Old Open Derby, which was won by Jarvis Anderson on board Im So Hollywood, owned by Rick and Sue Coyne from Stevensville, Montana. There was a tie for second place with Cody Halford on Little Chex 499 owned by Rodney Westrum of Williston, North Dakota and Nathan Ivie riding Moonshine N Juice owned by Brenton Hatch of Spanish Fork, Utah. Third place went to Chex DriftinOnCenter owned and ridden by Dean R. Johnson of Vale, South Dakota. The fourth place tie was earned by Eduardo Ribeiro on Unos Shining Jewel owned by Shield H Quarter Horses of Riverton, Wyoming and John Hindman on Cool Wimp, owned by Greg B. Slaughter of Vale, South Dakota. More results and photographs will be posted on our website,  Facebook and in the next issue of “The Wrangler” so stay tuned!

Peggy Peterson was the big winner from the raffle ticket fund raiser to win the custom made cowboy hat from Roger’s Western Hats. Mike Schmitz won the $175 Wal-Mart gift card; Andy Hawkins won the $100 gift card from Cabela’s; and Mike Manley won the $50 cash!  Our silent auction was a big success as well with four large tables overflowing with great items on which to bid.

We certainly saw all our organizing, planning, blood, sweat, and tears pay off this year!  We hope our reining trainers, competitors, fans, volunteers, officers, and board members were happy with how things developed over the weekend.  Take a moment to let us know how we did - we can always use the encouragement!

"Leg 'em Up" Fun Day - Cody, WY April 10 & 11, 2010
Posted On: May 02 2010

The CSRHA Cody Fun Day was just that…………..FUN, FUN, FUN.  The weather even cooperated.  First of all CSRHA would like to thank Drs. Frank and Catherine Schmidt for donating their beautiful facility and to judge Nathan Ivie from Spanish Fork, UT for donating his time and talent to judge this fund raising Fun Day show.  And a great big thanks to all the participants and volunteers that made this a truly FUN weekend.  Also, thank you to Sharon with Cabin Fever Catering for providing the tasty pulled pork and brisket lunch plates.  The proceeds from this show will help enable CSRHA to produce our high quality NRHA reining show, “The CSRHA Energy City Classic and Derby”, in Gillette, WY, June 4-6, 2010.  For more information on this show, please visit our web site at www.cowboystatesreiners.com

The format for this Fun Day was slightly different this year.  It was a two day show, so on Saturday you could ride the specified pattern in your class and get critiqued and scored throughout your ride.  Almost like a personal one on one lesson with a trainer during your pattern.  After Saturday’s show, Nate stayed for questions & answers and  helped with riders and their horses.  He even rode a horse or two.   Then on Sunday riders would come back and ride for a score using what they had learned the day before.  All in all it was a great show, great format and everyone had a great time.

This year, a fancy new show headstall was donated for the “Newbie” (a class for a home trained rider that has no earnings in reining) accumulating the highest combined score from the Newbie classes over both days.  The recipient of that award was Jan Britton and her gelding Dusty from Absarokee, MT.  Both are home trained.  Good goin’ Jan.  We saw a lot of new faces in the show pen who joined us to see what reining is all about.  To break up the “seriousness?” of a reining show, we highlighted Sunday’s show with an Egg & Spoon competition.  Riders are given one spoon and one egg and may only use one hand on the spoon.  They are then asked to walk trot and lope as in a pleasure class and the last one with the egg intact is the winner.  Congrats to Gary Cooper of Cody in this winner take all class.

Thank you all for joining us and supporting CSRHA.
